It's never too late to learn how to be style

Even if you've been dressing yourself for decades, there's always something new to discover—and even more importantly, there are always things you can do to improve your look.

Whether you're looking to update your wardrobe or just want some tips on how best to wear the clothes you already have, these 20 style tips will help you bring your game up a notch.

It's time to get your style on point.

Do you have a style icon? If so, then you are in luck.

Diego Herrera, the fashion designer who has dressed the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Hailey Baldwin has some tips for you if you want to get inspired by your favorite style icon.

We all have that one style icon that we try to follow – and that is a good thing. You can use that inspiration to come up with a look that you find comfortable in your 40s. If you are unsure whose style best matches you, Diego suggests that you should flip a few pages in fashion magazines to find out which icon’s style interests you.

You can also take cues from celebs and try to figure out what attracts you towards their styling choices and then you can make your way from there, Diego adds.

We all wish to add some gravitas to our looks by the time we hit our 40s. The best way to do so is by trying out a few monochromatic dresses instead of trying various colors.

Stylist Kendra Charisse Porter, founder of HonorYourStyle points out that monochromatic fashion works out best in subtle tones that give a timeless look, and colors like blue, gray, and black work best.

Monochromatic dressing is about wearing pieces that complement each other without making the look seem too busy or overdone. A simple shift dress in black or navy paired with a pair of nude pumps can make all the difference.

If you are looking for new fashion ideas, then you should consider using an inspiration board.

Mood boards aren’t a thing you had to use only in high school. You can make use of the inspiration board to see what works best for you in terms of fashion choices as a person who is in his or her 40s.

And if you are tech-savvy, just go over to Pinterest and you have options to create a variety of inspiration boards for different styles that you are passionate about by looking up people of the same

If you are not sure what that missing piece of your age-appropriate fashion puzzle is, just go for a colored leather outfit. Switching between black, brown, and navy can make all the difference in the world when it comes to looking more mature. While black is always going to be a staple in most wardrobes, adding other colors like navy blue or green will give you an extra edge when it comes to dressing for work or play.

Porter points out that colored leather is one of the best ways to boost your fashion game. Colors like navy, green, and burgundy in terms of leather jackets add a great sense of style and are a good addition to your wardrobe. If you are in a bold mood, you can even add vibrant colors in leather accessories to ramp up your style quotient. And there is a ton of vegan leather as well, so you can make it easy for the animals too!

By the time you hit your 40s, you are already aware of who you actually are, and it should be the case with your fashion sense as well.

And the best way to express that fashion sense is to try and work out what your signature look should be.

Stylist Elizabeth Kosich points out that you should really figure out what exactly defines you and work your fashion around that. And there is nothing better than embracing your own sense of style and working your way up from there.

Crystal Cave Style founder Crystal Cave believes that incorporating things you like in your fashion sense is an easy way to give your overall look a great makeover. Whether you like hot yoga classes or you are someone who is into tropical vacations, there are inspirations everywhere that you can take cues from. Not only does it make you feel at ease with what you are wearing, but it also gives others a chance to know about your persona without you uttering a single word, Crystal adds.

Don't let the fear of shopping overwhelm you. You are in your 40s now, so you should have a pretty good idea of what colors and styles suit you.

You just need to maintain a sense of calmness and simplicity in your fashion sense, and channel that into creating a capsule wardrobe. You just need a couple of suits, five tops, three bottoms and you can easily manage over 40 dressing combinations with ease. By focusing on "less is more", you can focus more on style and less on what to pick, adds Kosich.

You've got to keep your basics updated.

A good tee and a pair of shoes can take you so many places, and the problem is, they don't always stay in the best condition.

That's why we're here to tell you that updating your basics is key—and that's true whether you're in your 20s or 40s.

Fashion stylist Catherine Bachelier says that updating your basics will help you make better fashion choices. She recommends one should buy at least a couple of tees, for both men and women. And if you notice your shoes are looking old, a quick trip to your nearest cobbler should work wonders. Bachelier points out that shoe repairs help keep your look updated!

Now that you have picked the basics for your wardrobe, it is time for you to spend some real money. Kosich points out that the 40s is the right time to buy timeless pieces and add a sense of flair to your dressing style.

If you are a businesswoman, going for a power suit with stud earrings and a handbag will go a long way in boosting your look. For moms, a winter coat, cashmere sweaters, or a boot does the trick; while for the philanthropists, black-colored outfits go a long way in making a style statement.

This is also the time when you should start thinking about accessories such as sunglasses and jewelry as well as shoes and bags. You can also get yourself some new jewelry pieces if you have been wearing the same ones for years now.

Outerwear is the last piece of the puzzle when it comes to completing your outfit. It's what makes the difference between looking like you're trying too hard or just right. But instead of going for something that matches your existing outfit, you should focus on making the most out of any piece with the right set of outerwear, says Carmen Alfaro, founder of Moda Kalon fashion brand.

If you still have your favorite pair of jeans from your 20s or the mini skirt you once loved, you can use them and add a bit of inspiration to give yourself an age-appropriate look that stands out from the rest. You can pair it up with a blazer or poncho in neutral tones and you are good to go, says Alfaro.

We've been around the block, and we know what's up. That's why we're here to tell you that a kimono
is the best thing for your wardrobe.

We speak from experience: our founders, Scott Sussman and AJ Majumdar, have both been wearing kimonos for years.

"It's not just about the fact that it looks cool," says Scott. "It's also really warm."

"And it's super easy to pair with your everyday look," adds AJ. "It goes well with anything."

So if you're looking for something new to add to your wardrobe—something that will make you look great, feel good, and stay warm—you should definitely consider adding a kimono to your look!

When it comes to dressing, your body temperature should dictate what you're wearing.

A new study from the University of Tasmania suggests that women in their 40s should wear clothes that are eucalyptus-based and absorb moisture. The reason? Peri-menopause—the time in a woman's life when she is experiencing hormonal changes that can make her feel hot, cold, or both.

The research was conducted on 100 women in their 40s and 50s who were experiencing peri-menopause symptoms. It found that 88 percent of them experienced more comfort when they wore clothing made from eucalyptus fibers.

"For those in their 40s, peri-menopause is a thing that needs to be factored in," says Karen Cave, an expert on the topic and director of research at Style For Life. "We often recommend eucalyptus-based clothing because of its cooling properties and the ability to soak up moisture."

When it comes to styles and trends, there are a lot of things that you can experiment with. However, before trying something new, it is important that you understand that your comfort rather than age should be the parameter that decides what clothes you want to experiment with. By incorporating your inspirations with trends, body type, and profession, one can easily come up with style choices that make you look great in your 40s.

If you want to try that trending animal print, you should go for a piece that feels naturally best for you along with a silhouette that you are comfortable with. If you haven’t worn short skirts in ages, wearing a leopard print micro mini won’t make it for you!
